Cette vaste commune jouxte pour partie au Lot et Garonne. Elle domine et surveille la vallée de l’Auvignon, frontière entre Le Fimarcon et le Condomois. « Pouy » signifie podium ou sommet et « Gazau » pourrait venir de Gazaü, c’est-à-dire jardin en gascon.
Sur le plateau, on dénombre de nombreux phénomènes karstiques : gouffres, dolines, grottes et rivière souterraine de Sinaï. Le territoire boisé fut habité depuis des millénaires (haches de pierre polie).
Au cours de la période gallo-romaine, quatre villae se partageaient de vastes clairières et sont restées longtemps siège d’habitat, de culte et de sépultures. Aux XIIe et XIIIe siècles, les populations éparses se regroupent dans un site sécurisant, au « Pouy », autour d’un château.

Durant la période « anglaise » se sont érigées les tours d’Estrepouy* et du Déhès. Toutes deux sont de formes carrées, hautes d’une vingtaine de mètres pratiquement sans ouverture dans la partie inférieure. C’est au XVIe siècle devant une population croissante que le village s’agrandit avec la naissance d’un bourg neuf.
Le castelnau primitif, de forme ovoïde que l’on peut comparer à celui de Larressingle, conserve toujours ses remparts, une porte en arc brisé prolongée par un couloir voûté.
L’église d’origine romane (murs, porte nord surmontée d’un chrisme, fenêtres, chœur semi-circulaire) s’est dotée d’un porche gothique au XIVe siècle. C’est au XXe siècle que l’on démolit sa vieille tour pour y construire un clocher moderne. A l’intérieur, on découvre dans un mur, un fragment de sarcophage en marbre, quatre enfaux dont deux vastes, deux colonnes avec chapiteaux représentants un musicien à gauche, feuilles d’acanthe et angelots à droite.

During the Gallo-Roman period, four villages shared vast clearings and were for a long time places of stay, of workship, and of burial.
In the XIIth and XIIIth centuries, the sparse population joined in a reassuring place, at the “Pouy” around a castle.
During the “English” period the Estrepouy and Déhes towers were erected. Both of them are square, 20 meters high, without hardly any opening at the bottom part.
In the XVIth century, because of an increasing population, the village expanded with a new part: the market town. The primitive castelnau, with an egg form and which can be compared with Larressingle, has kept its walls, a door in Gothic arch extended by a vaulted corridor.
The Roman church (the walls, the north door, windows, semi circular choirs…) got a Gothic porch at the XIVth century. It was at the XXth century that its old tower was demolished in order to build a modern bell.
Inside, you can discover: on the wall you’ll see a fragment of a sarcophagus in marble, four funeral recess (two of them are vast), two pillars with capitals representing a musician on the left, some acanthus and little angels on the right.
